On April 19, 2019, Zhang Zhan was detained by Shanghai’s Pudong police for 10 days on charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” On September 8, she protested on Shanghai’s Nanjing East Road holding an umbrella and was again detained for 65 days under the same charge. On November 13, the Huangpu police detained her for another 10 days, this time on charges of “disturbing public order.”
On May 15, 2020, Zhang Zhan was detained by the Pudong police again, this time for her reporting on the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, facing charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” She was formally arrested on June 18. On August 18, her case was submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review, and she began a hunger strike on September 2. Her case was transferred to the Shanghai Pudong New District Court on September 18, and on December 28, she was sentenced to four years in prison. Zhang Zhan decided not to appeal on January 13, 2021, and continued her hunger strike. On July 31, she protested in prison with a partial hunger strike and was forcibly fitted with a feeding tube. Due to health deterioration from prolonged fasting, she was transferred to a prison hospital in July 2023. Zhang Zhan’s sentence ended on May 17, 2024.
In late August 2024, Zhang Zhan lost contact while traveling to her hometown and was later found detained in a Shanghai detention center on charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” She has been under criminal detention for over 37 days as of now.
